Umbria, the hidden gem in central Italy

Umbria, in central Italy, is the lesser known neighbour of Tuscany and a real gem waiting to be discovered. The countryside is magnificent with rolling hills, beautiful valleys and wonderful historic towns perched on the hilltops. Perhaps the most well known town nest to Assisi is Perugia which is the home of Buitoni pasta. However, this town has a lot to offer Italian tourists with beautiful Palazzo dei priori and the Galleria Nazionale, which has the regions best art collection, as well as a jazz festival. Nearby to the west is the lovely Lago Trasimeno which is a lovely place to rent an Umbrian villa. In contrast Assisi is a mecca for tourists and a fabulous place to visit because of its Basilica and Franciscan heritage. The city is visible from miles around as it is settled on the crest and slopes of Monte Subasio.

Other towns worth visiting in Umbria include: Gubbio which is high and remote and reputedly has the most beautiful appearance of these northern Umbria towns; Spoleto which was the most romantic town ever seen according to Shelley; Terni the southernmost town in Umbria the birthplace of St Valentine and therefore considered a truly romantic place; Narni, a close and unspoilt town with narrow streets and a fortress; Amelia with some of the oldest and strongest fortifications in Italy; abd Citta di Castello which is the northernmost town in Umbria with its old walls and Duomo.
